Living Green

Welcome to the links/tips web page for living green.  By living more green you can make a difference in this great life, which will improve the environment for all living things.

Here are some tips and links that you may find helpful and informative.

Using re-usable groceries bags (and/or baskets) for your groceries.  Click on one of the below links for more information:

But why stop at using re-usable bags for groceries. I use them for overnight travel bags, for toting items around, as gift bags, etc...

I also use baskets in same the way I use re-usable bags. They are not only very functional, but beautiful as well.  Below are some links for Fair Trade Baskets:

You may be wondering "What is Fair Trade".  Fair Trade is a partnership based on greater equity and a partnership with the international trading system.  It allows for a prompt and fair payment, safe working conditions, access to global markets, etc...  Check out the link below for information on Fair Trade:

I try to buy Fair Trade products when I can't find what I need from a local source and when it makes sense.  I'm also a supporter of buying local when possible.  This not only cuts down on the carbon footprint that is left behind from trucking in, flying in, and shipping in produce/products outside our local area, it also supports our local community.  When buying local produce, it is fresher, taste better, better for you, supports local farms and your community.  For more information, check out the links below:

Check out NaturalNews.com  web site for lots of articles and videos on Natural living.

Also, it is a good idea to hire local companies and individuals when they can fulfill a work/service need that you have. This is a great way to help our local economy and support our local communities.

Using Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs instead of the traditional incandescent light bulbs will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a huge amount.  CFL can use up 75% less electricity than traditional incandescent light bulbs. Wow. I sure like using less electricity and saving money on my electric bill.

Just make sure that you recylce these CFL bulbs. CFL bulbs contain mercury, so we don't want to send these CFL bulbs to landfills where they can break and release their mercury into the soil and ground water. The amount of mercury that these CFL bulbs contain is small, but if millions of households are using them and sending them to landfills, this would add up to a large amount of mercury.  We can make a difference by recyling these CFL bulbs.

For more information about CFL bulbs and where to recycle them, check out the links below:

Here are the 3 R's: REDUCE, the REUSE, then RECYCLE.  One of the ways we can reduce waste, is to use a re-usable canteen or water bottle, instead of purchasing lots of individual water bottles that either go to the landfill or to the recycling center.  Check out the link below:
